REGENERAR Engages Future Scientists in Brain Repair and Neurological Disorders

Interactive Session Introduces 9th Graders to Cutting-Edge Research and Gene Editing Technologies

Date: may 9

The REGENERAR project, an innovative initiative funded by Horizon Europe, recently hosted an engaging activity at Escola EBI/JI Prof. Dr. Ferrer Correia as part of the school’s Science Week. On May 9, 2024, collaborators Inês Tomé Ribeiro and Simão Correia Santos led a 90-minute session for 17 ninth-grade students, aiming to bring science closer to young minds through interactive and educational activities.

During the session, students were divided into two groups to participate in rotating stations featuring different hands-on activities. At the first station, students had the opportunity to handle laboratory equipment, such as micropipettes, serological pipettes, and multiwell plates, mixing dyes in 50 mL Falcon tubes while learning basic lab techniques. At the second station, students observed microscope slides of brain, eye, skin, and heart samples, and viewed fixed organs, including a mouse brain and liver, to gain a deeper understanding of biological structures.

In addition to the practical activities, the team highlighted the importance and impact of research funding that makes projects like REGENERAR possible. This project focuses on developing gene-editing technologies to promote brain repair. The students and teachers responded enthusiastically to the session, providing positive feedback that underscored the success of the event.

This activity reflects REGENERAR’s commitment to inspiring the next generation of scientists and engaging the community in the journey toward new therapies for neurological disorders. The project continues to make science accessible and engaging, demonstrating how research can transform lives.
